The Main Examination consists of 1750 out of the total 2025 marks which decide a candidate's rank. It consists of 9 papers in all. Paper I is of Essay, Papers II-IV are General Studies, Papers V and VI are of the Optional Subject chosen by the Candidate. Finally, there are two qualifying language papers, one in the English Language and one in any of the Indian Languages provided by the UPSC.
